Animal Treatment
Nov 26 2007, 7:48 AM EST
The animal abuse exhibited in the most recent show was heartbreaking. Chickens stuffed into mesh bags and run around, baby goats strapped tightly into baskets and driven around on bikes, some with items piled on top of them. Disgusting. The contestents are so hell bent on winning that they had no regard for the wellbeing of the poor animals. Have a heart and leave the animals out of the show.

It would have been nice to see the teams give their chicken water at the gold mine challenge. At least the fate of the chickens was acknowledged. I'll try not to think about what's in the cards for the little goats. This season has been pretty hard on some of the animals. At least the camels got to kick their tormenters and the donkey drew blood for it's misfortune. Remember a couple of seasons ago when the temple monkeys kept frustrating the contestant's efforts to prepare a beautiful banquet table for them? I loved the irony.

My sentiments exactly! I already sent an e-mail to CBS expressing my opinions about their lack of humane treatment of the animals. I am opposed to ALL use of animals for entertainment sake and find that their challenges encourages mistreatment of these animals. I encourage all of you to send an e-mail to CBS voicing your concern. It's very important that we speak up for these creatures that do not have a voice.

I totally agree. This is the first season that I have watched and I am appalled at the exploitation of small helpless animals. Do the producers and participants think this is entertainment? They disregard the values of respect and compassion for fellow creatures in the pursuit of greed. Have animals always been such a major part of the show? I strongly urge it to be stopped.

I was very tempted to turn the station but wanted to see if anything else would happen. The chickens stuffed into the bags and carried around like a sack of garbage and the goats actually tied down and unable to move. Of course viewers only seen a one hour long show, how long did this abuse actually go on for??? Were the goats tied down for the sake of this show or are they always treated this way, I'd like to know? 12 out of 14 found this valuable. Do you? |

I'm not happy about using animals for entertainment, but there was nothing unusual about their treatment considering the country that they are in. If you want to be truly disgusted, try checking out American animal treatment. Pigs and chickens never touch anything natural in their entire lives. Crammed in small places. Lights are never turned off so chickens will keep laying eggs. If you want to complain about the treatment of animals raised for food, there are much better places.

Actually I do compalin quite vehemently about the treatment of animals in this country from factory farms and fur farms to laboratories and entertainment. I write letters, make phone calls and protest as well as trying to lead by example by not eating meat etc. I do think we should all contact the sponsors of this show to protest animal abuse in the show.

yes the monkeys was funny and appropriate animal interactionmistreatment of animals, especially physically is a bad thing to put on TV maybe the racers could be paired with a local guide to prevent animal cruelty. the producers could easily add drama with 3 choices of task - racers had to do 2 of 3 it makes their decisions more crucial. Racers, stop blaming animals for you loss. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

As I noted in my letter to CBS...I do realize that these animals were going off to slaughter (I'm not dumb), HOWEVER, it should be our responsibility to not mock or take advantage of their short life by using them as toy pieces in these challenges. It just broke my heart to see those chickens carried around like a sack of potatoes and the baby goats strapped down in laundry baskets. How could the producers "okay" this? You'd think there would be ONE compassionate animal lover in the bunch. Unless they only employ local producers to conjur up these stupid games. On another note - I am fully aware of the horrible conditions that chickens, pigs, turkeys, cattle, etc. endure in the hands of US slaughter houses. I write letters, make phone calls, etc. I can only urge all of you on this message board to write CBS directly, and perhaps their sponsers. One more challenge that incorporates an animal...and I'm turning AR off forever! 10 out of 11 found this valuable. Do you? |

I am completely disgusted by what has been going on in this season. I am glad that I am not the only one that feels this way. I am fully aware that animals are not regfarded as highly in some other countries. Even though those goats were going to market did they have to be strapped to a bicycle of someone who has no idea where they are going and would obviously drop them? I couldnt beleive one goat had sticks piled on top of it. I was in tears by this. I even thought the way that people yelled at the donkeys and camels was unncessary. Animals should not be handles by those who do not know how to handle them....especially people who are frustrated and trying to win a race! To me this season has been sickening.

Regardless of the conditions and treatment the animals are subjected to in other parts of the world, we do not need CBS to broadcast something so disturbing. As a broadcasting company they have the ethical responsibility to show compassion to animals. I would hope they have the creative ingenuity to invent challenges that don't involve animals. Carrying around a chicken in a bag? Going to a market full of goats that are bound inside baskets? Dragging a donkey down a road by it's jaw? This only further desensitizes people with regard to the ethical treatment of animals, thus creating more Michael Vick's, more circus animal shows, and others like the sick kids who stabbed a hog some three dozen times in my home town and left it to suffer. I know that the food we eat is not always corralled, killed, and shipped in the most appetizing or humane ways, but we do not broadcast these acts for entertainment. I am a huge CBS fan, but for the first time I will CEASE to follow a series they have created. I'm sure that none of this was broadcast with any malice or ill-will, but to exploit a community for ratings being bad enough, we should stop there and not exploit animals for the same purpose.

Although I do not agree with some of the broadcasting decisions, they are in a different country, a different set of rules, standard of living and completely different lifestyle. What happened on the show was nothing out of the ordinary for that country. In fact, the whole "chicken in a bag" was actually honoring per their African culture. If part of the show's desire is to bring awareness of and change some of the ignorance of other cultures, we cannot expect to only see things that are familiar to American culture.

"Ethical reponsibility to show compassion to animals"? Where do you get that? These animals are not pets. They are part of the food chain. They are raised to die for those people to live.

I get the food chain, believe me I do. However, as humans, we have the RESPONSIBILITY to ensure that these animals have a comfortable, respectable, clean and healthy life before dying. Since we are at the top of the food chain, shouldn't we be humane? Just because the chickens, donkeys, camels are not pets does not mean that they don't deserve to be treated humanely. We should not use them as game pieces for human entertainment, whether it's in a developed country like Ireland or a 3rd world African country.

We have a responsibility to see that these people have an ample food source. These are wild animals that we cage in an attempt to provide that food source. If these animals were left in the wild, they would be subjected to some very harsh conditions. ei: searching for food everyday, dealing with predators. These food chain animals have food given to them everyday, protection from predators up until they go to market and most have shelter from inclement weather. Remember that TAR tries to tie the race to local customs, I'm sure that putting the goat into the basket and on a bike is how they are transported to market there.

Donkeys are not wild animals, neither are chickens and goats. They are domesticated farm animals that do not roam the wilds of Africa. The only thing that this forum is asking from CBS is to NOT exploit these animals and use them as game pieces. Don't even get me started on Zoos and how they "protect" animals from predators and disease. I'd rather be free and take my chances. 7 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |
