Chile's Lake district is one of the most scenic and pristine areas in the world. Massive fjords, glaciers, volcanoes and crystal clear rivers abound. It is part of Northern Patagonia. All the places are within a 90min drive from Puerto Montt. The photos below were taken from the website www.pbase.com/faerie_39/southern_patagonia

Lunch at the Puerto Montt Fish market. Puerto Montt sits on a bay near the ocean and is a hub for the fishing industry in the area. It is modern in many respects and easy to get around. There is even a museum honoring Pope John Paul's visit

Volcan Osorno

Volcan Osorno is located between two large lakes. Lago Llanquihue and Todos Los Santos. This photo is taken from 40 miles away in Puerto Varas, a scenic town 30 minutes from Puerto Montt. The volcano is about 8000 feet up from the lake. The last time it erupted, it was witnessed by Charles Darwin!! The racers would have admired this volcano for close to an hour on their drive.

Small boats on the shore of Todos Los Santos where the Amazing Race ended episode 3 of All Stars. It is a massive lake and the source for the Rio Petrohue which the contestants river rafted. The Rio Petrohue comes within just a few miles of Osorno and Lago Llanquihue, but takes a sharp turn and goes behind another large volcano, the less photographed Calbuco, on its way to open waters Boats on the shore of Todos Los Santos

The sunbathers on the beach at Puerto Varas on Lago Llanquihue (Yankee-wee) Puerto Varas is a beautiful town with good food and hotels. Even a small casino and an ex-pat American who makes chocolates. While it is scenic and pleasant, there are spectular places to go on day trips, like the Rio Petrohue and the waterfalls, up to Volcan Osorno (there is a ski lift). Hot springs, horseback riding and various area tours are worthwhile. Look carefully at the sky in the background. The soft white puffy thing is not a cloud but the snowy top of Osorno

This area is magnificent. I river rafted on the Petrohue and it was the only river in Chile that I didn't fall in (out of 4). Have a webpage with many area photos.

The drive from Puerto Montt to Petrohue is stunning. Volcan Osorno is magnificent. It rises up 8000 feet from a very large lake, Lago Llanquihue, which is only a little above sea level. You see the volcano for an hour while driving there. Another volcano, Calbuco is to the east. There are more volcanoes visible from Todos Los Santos, another large lake where the episode ended. A little upriver from where the rafting started is a major waterfall area, but I did not see that. Stay at Quinta Del Lago near Puerto Varas. It is close to Puerto Montt, Osorno, and Petrohue among others. Keep in mind that a lot of the fruit the US imports in winter comes from Chile in the summer -- and so does a lot of fish.
