Petrohue is located in Chile's scenic Lake District, on the shores of Todos los Santos, a peaceful lake in the Andes Mountains. The landmark snow-capped volcano Osorno is the centerpiece of the national park in the region, which is famous for its outdoor adventures: rafting, fishing, hiking, and more. The picture on the right is of waterfalls near Todos Los Santos on Rio Petrohue with Volcan Osorno in the backdrop. The town of Petrohue, and that is perhaps giving it more billing than appropriate, is about as big as a postage stamp, so you will not find much in travel brochures about the town. When looking for things to do in the region, look into the larger cities like Puerto Montt or Chile's lake district. Because there is a lot to do. Think of Petrohue, the lake, falls and rafting -- as a day trip. The main airport in the area is located about midway between Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas.
The drive from Puerto Montt to Todos Los Santos is about 90 minutes. Driving from Puerto Varas to Petrohue, you see the slopes of Calbuco on the right, with Osorno in front and the lake on the left. It is stunning. Puerto Montt is the largest city in the area, followed by Puerto Varas, nicknamed the city of roses. Puerto Montt is on open water. Leave the bay and go west and you will be in the Pacific ocean. The lake district is big with several large lakes and volcanos ... including some that are acting up. Puerto Montt is a bit of a dividing point. From Puerto Montt north, Chile is modern and accessible. Go south and you enter some of the most rugged, amazing and unspoiled wilderness in the world. This area is geologically active. Aside from the high density of volcanoes, the largest earthquake in modern times was off the southern Chilean coast. For those who want a little luxury with their outdoor activities, volcanic activity means hot springs ... and there are many in the area.
