The defining event of Miami's early history — the Cuban revolution of 1959 — naturally had a profound effect on the city's cuisine.

If you're interested in experiencing authentic Cuban food, try La Carreta (3632 SW 8th Street), an affordable, family-oriented answer to the "Where do the locals eat Cuban food?" question. Great if you have kids (read: fast service). The menu features a number of classic, comforting Cuban dishes like arroz con pollo (chicken and rice) and ropa vieja (shredded beef).

Little Havana is home to two other reasonably priced Cuban restaurants:

Casa Juancho (2436 SW 8th Street) is long on romance (strolling musicians help set the mood) and on menu -- you'll have a hard time narrowing down your choices from the lengthy menu. If you like pork dishes, you're in hog heaven.

The deceptively named Versailles (3555 SW 8th Street) serves delicious and affordable Cuban food and is a great setting to seek immersion in Cuban culture.

		Mosaico (1000 S Miami Avenue; 305-371-3473) This gorgous, romantic restaurant serves inspired Spanish food in downtown Miami's Brickell area.
		Wish at The Hotel (801 Collins Ave., 305-674-9474) Outdoor seating in a private garden with a huge fountain provides one of Miami's most romantic settings. Drinks are served with colorful, glowing ice cubes. Food is superb and service is friendly and efficient.
