| The episode started as Azaria and Hendekea opened their clue at exactly midnight in Ireland. The next destination was revealed to be Amsterdam. Racers were instructed to take the train from the airport to the central train station and then find the Melkmeisjesbrug bridge for the next clue. Azaria & Hendekea took off for Shannon airport with several teams very close behind and the final few over an hour behind. On the way to the airport, Nicolas & Donald dealt with a flat tire and the Miami chicas (Marianna & Julia) took a wrong turn arriving very late. At the airport, teams found that there were 7 and 8:30 AM flights to Dublin but then two connecting flights to Amsterdam with limited seats on the earlier (12:15PM) flight. This resulted in a fight for a single pair of standby seats in Dublin between Nicolas & Donald and father/daughter team Ronald & Christina. Nick was somewhat pushy and rude (but got the seats) prompting a bizarre chastising outburst from Ronald, who is beginning to emerge as somewhat crazed character. Due to their direction snafu, Marianna & Julia were alone on the second Shannon flight but were relieved to be sharing the later flight to Amsterdam with Ronald & Christina and the minister couple Kate & Pat. Arriving in Amsterdam, Azaria & Hendekea extended their lead slightly by avoiding the whole pesky ticket issue and just jumping on the first train to Central station. Sometimes taking a gamble like that pays off. However, the next route marker proved to be a Detour and the other teams quickly bunched up at this location. The two choices were Hoist It or Hunt It. Hoist it required teams to hoist 5 furniture items including a grandfather clock and a TV up to an upper level window in an Amsterdam house directly adjacent to the route marker. Hunt It required teams to travel on foot to a nearby bike parking lot, find two marked bikes out of thousands and then ride their bikes 5 miles to another location receive the next clue. Of the first group of teams, Azaria & Hendekea decided to hunt for the bikes and managed to do this fairly quickly. The remaining teams Lorena & Jason, Nathan & Jennifer, TK & Rachel, Shana & Jennifer and Kynt & Vyxsin all went with Hoist it with varying degrees of success. The difficult part of this task was securing the various articles to the hoist using straps. Jason proved to be a natural at this and breezed through the task finishing in first place. TK was totally useless and Rachel eventually had to take over from him after the other three teams finished up. The next clue directed racers to take the bus to the nearby town of Ransdorp. On the first bus out were Lorena & Jason, Nathan & Jennifer, and Shana & Jennifer with the Kynt & Vyxsin slightly lost on the way to the bus stop. Meanwhile, Azartia & Hendekea finished up their bike hunt/ride task and the late flight teams arrived in Amsterdam. They all chose Hunt it. As is often the case with these needle/haystack AR tasks anything can happen depending on concentration and luck. The Chicas found their bikes quickly and were on their way. Ronald kept up an almost constant diatribe with his daughter – distracting them from the task – and increasing the tension between the two of them. The minister couple also had problems concentrating on this task but Nick and Gramps did better. The second bus to Ransdorp featured Kynt & Vyxsin, Azaria & Hendekea, TK & Rachel and Nicolas & Donald while Ronald & Christina and Marianna & Julia arrived on a third bus as the ministers finished the bike task. At Ransdorp, teams found a Roadblock requiring one team member to vault over a water-filled ditch. Jason and Shana were able to perform this quickly with Jennifer (Nathan & Jennifer) just slightly behind them. The next clue instructed racers to make their way to the Pit stop at the nearby Durgerdam yacht club. This required riding a special Dutch bike called a bakfiet – kind of a recumbent bike with a cargo basket in the center (where the teammate had to sit). Jason and Lorena arrived first at the pit stop (winning a pair of bikes) with Nate and Jen (2nd) and the Blondes (3rd) close behind them. Back at the ditch, the Goths, Azaria & Hendekea and TK & Rachel all were quickly successful with the vault. TK & Rachel however missed the drop off point for the bakfiets and ended up finishing behind the other two teams (Kynt & Vyxsin 4th, Azaria & Hendekea 5th, TK & Rachel 6th). The episode highlight featured the 68 year old Donalds' efforts at the ditch vault. He missed multiple times ending up in the black, muddy water. He eventually decided to strip off his wet, heavy clothes and valiantly continued to vault in a banana hammock. Marianna & Julia and Ronald & Christina arrived on the third bus as Gramps eventually made the vault. Marianna (apparently a former pole-vaulter) quickly cleared the ditch on her first try and she and her sister were able to beat Nicolas & Donald on the bike ride to finish 7th and 8th respectively. Hampered by Ron’s continued rambling abuse, Christina struggled to concentrate on the ditch vault task although she eventually told him to be quiet and then was able to make it across. The troubled team finished in 9th place and were the last team to clear this leg. Ronald commented that he had become the “Archie Bunker” of their home – providing the episode title quote. Kate & Pat were clearly behind from the beginning of this leg and got further behind struggling with the bike hunt/ride task and getting the bus to Ransdorp. They completed the Roadblock and arrived at the pit stop mat to find they had been eliminated from the race. |
| In Hoist It, teams had to use a traditional rope and pulley system to hoist five pieces of furniture up a typical Amsterdam residence. The task required brains and brawn, but the buildings were just a few feet away, so teams did not need to travel far. Lorena & Jason, Kynt & Vyxsin, Shana & Jennifer, Nathan & Jennifer, and TK & Rachel chose the task. In Hunt It, teams made their way on foot several blocks to a parking lot to search through thousands of bicycles, the most common form of transportation in Amsterdam, and find the two bikes tagged with a specific color designated in their clue. After finding their bikes, teams had to ride them five miles to an attendant who would give them their next clue. Azaria & Hendekea, Nicolas & Donald, Marianna & Julia, Ronald & Christina and Kate & Pat chose this task. |
| Teams had to complete a single vault over a watery, muddy ditch (known as fierljeppen) and successfully touch both feet to the marshy grass on the opposite side in a regional sport known as ditch vaulting in order to receive their next clue. Jason, Shana, Jennifer (of Nathan & Jennifer), Kynt, Hendekea, Rachel, Donald, Marianna, Christina and Pat performed the roadblock. |
| Best use of strategy: Helpers: Schemers: Biggest comeback: After arriving to the first pit stop in 10th place on the first leg, dating couple Nathan & Jennifer rebounded with a strong performance and finished this leg in 2nd place. Team to watch next week: Ronald & Christina, Lorena & Jason |
Mini-Scorecard | 1st Place: Lorena & Jason Eliminated: Kate & Pat |

The teams are now heading out to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, so now the race to catch the right flights begin. Some teams were lucky, but some weren't as lucky. I did think Nicolas & Donald (specifically Nicolas) was being really rude to the stewardess, he could of been a little more nice despite the rush. What I didn't expect was Ronald speaking up to him. I thought that was unneeded.
Ronald was definitely very vocal in this episode. Not just with Nicolas at the airport, but with his daughter Christina as well. The problem with Ronald, I think, is that he's trying way too hard at fatherhood. Trying too hard is not making their relationship any better, he needs to lighten up and not talk so much. It would make his life, and Christina's life much more easier. Meanwhile, Lorena & Jason propel ahead into first place at the Pit Stop and win a pair of bikes. But unfortunately for Kate & Pat, being at the pack of the pack and not catching the bus with the other trailing teams led them further behind. This then led them coming into last at the Pit Stop and being the second team eliminated from the race. They seemed really nice, so it's too bad they went so soon. Well, we'll see what's in store for the racers real soon, see you next week! |
